Haines A/C was proud to sponsor “Spook” and his awesome caretaker, Tayler through LYLA (LaBelle Youth Livestock Association) and Hendry County 4-H. Final weigh-in was February 9. The Show was February 12 and the livestock sale was February 14 . Spook sold for $4.75 per pound. Tayler has had the hog since the end of October and its initial weight was 70 pounds.
Tayler is completely responsible for everything. She receives the proceeds check and puts most of it in her college savings plan. This is her 3rd year, so she has saved enough to buy her own hog, feed, and supplies. She cleans his pen, feeds him, works with him, brushes him, cleans him. Tayler attends monthly meetings and has to complete a record book of costs, pictures, a story telling about her project, what meds and wormers she gave them and how much, weight gain, and then how much her hog sold for and show if she made a profit or loss for the year. It has taught her responsibility and basically, that it takes money to make money.
