TWO COMMON TYPES OF AIR CONDITIONING FILTERS

As most of you know, you need to change your home air conditioning filter every month, or 2 to 3 months depending on the kind of filter you have.  Air filters are used to keep the air in your home cleaner, and changing the air filter regularly will help maintain your AC unit and even save you some money on your electric bill!  We change the filters twice a year for our maintenance contract customers, but you can purchase additional filters for those between months as well.  Below we will outline 2 of the most common types of air conditioning filters that we find in most homes.

The most common type of filter, usually used by homeowners, is a mechanical air filter–which uses synthetic fibers to trap debris and dust that is in the air and prevents it from circulating throughout your home. These filters are usually inexpensive and need to be replaced often due to their low MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ratings.  The higher the MERV rating on an air filter, the better quality.

The second type of filter is a pleated air filter.  Pleated air filters remove 30 to 45% of all air pollutants that are found in a typical home.  Pleated air filters have more fibers per square inch thus making this type of filter better at trapping air pollutants.  Pleated air filters have a high MERV rating and are usually a bit more expensive than mechanical air filters.
